The Joy of Learning: A New Free Book from IAE
The Joy of Learning is a new, free IAE book based on a series of recently published IAE Newsletters (IAE, 2016). Robert Sylwester served as co-editor of the IAE Newsletter for many years and was co-editor of six previous IAE Newsletter books. This new book is dedicated to Bob, who died August 5, 2016, which was somewhat before writing and editing of the current book was completed. A number of tributes to Bob from his many colleagues and friends are included in the book.
All seven IAE Newsletter books co-edited by Sylwester and Moursund are listed at the end of this IAE Blog.
Joy in Learning and Using What One Learns
Some students really enjoy school, some say they hate it, and most fall between these extremes. The Joy of Learning explores how to improve education by making it more enjoyable to students—as well as to teachers, parents, and others interested in improving education (Moursund, 1/2/2017).
An intact human brain has a number of sensory centers that feel pleasure when a person learns and make use of what is learned. Thus, a good educational system is intrinsically motivating to learners provided that it is both authentic (relevant, useful) in the eyes of the learners and those facilitating the learning, and also brings pleasure to both groups.
This book was specifically written for preservice and inservice teachers and other who are directly involved in helping students to get a better education. The 19 chapters cover a broad range of practitioner-based and research-based methods to make learning more enjoyable, of more immediate use, and of more long term use to learners.
Each individual chapter of the book is relatively self-contained. The chapters have been grouped into sections:
Part 1: Introduction and Background
Part 2: Internal Elements: Underlying Neurobiology
Part 3. Psychologically Driven Elements
Part 4: External Elements
The "flavor" of the book is captured by the titles of the Part 4 chapters:
Chapter 13: Joy of Learning and Using Math
Chapter 14: Joyful Conflict in Schools
Chapter 15: A Music Teacher Unravels an Assessment Conundrum
Chapter 16: Assessment for Differentiated Instruction
Chapter 17: The Role of Student Questioning in Joyful Learning
Chapter 18: Natural Learning: Creative Improvisational Explorations
Chapter 19: Out with the Old and In with the New
What You Can Do
It is the nature of humans to be both lifelong learners and lifelong teachers. Every interaction between people is both a learning and teaching experience for all who are involved.
Start paying more attention to the nature of the interactions you have with others. Perhaps you can make these both more enjoyable (pleasurable) and more effective at the same time.
